Video games. While they may seem like the bane of every parent's existence, they don't have to be—many of them offer unique learning features. And with increased requirements in schools placing unprecedented demands on children, parents and even grandparents, it may be time to start thinking about video games as teaching tools. The learning component of gaming can be optimized with parent involvement. That means understanding what makes a game both fun and educational.
What makes a game fun?

Today, for the first time in a long time, I was asked about sugar gliders. A woman asked where I had come up with the idea for the downy fliers in the Ancient Mirrors stories. She thought that I had perhaps combined several different creatures to arrive at my downy flier description. She was quite surprised to find that I had simply described one of my sugar gliders.
Sometimes I forget that not everyone lives with gliders. They have enchanting, cat-like personalities, their curiosity is amazing…

Well, it's almost October again, and that means sign-ups for the annual National Novel Writing Month event are right around the corner. If you aren't familiar with it, National Novel Writing Month, affectionately known as NaNoWriMo, is an annual event that brings professional and amateur writers together for a month while they write novels.
Last year, after years of watching others participate in this Office of Letters and Light sponsored event, I finally decided to jump in and give it

For many kids, back-to-school signifies the end to the dog-days-of-summer and reuniting with classmates and friends. It means shopping for new clothes and school supplies, but it also signifies studying, homework and tests. When it comes to hitting the books, will your kids be digging their heels in and refusing to get back into the swing of things? Engage them with these gripping sci-fi/fantasy novels that examine real-life issues facing today’s young adults. Huge plus, they are also on most li…

While I often read my work aloud at book signings, schools and libraries, I had never heard anyone else read my work aloud until this month.
Oral interpretive reader Earl Mohr read a selection from an advance copy of
Damselflies: An Ancient Mirrors Tale to an enraptured audience during his performance on Saturday. Also known as the Wizard of Od', Earl Mohr is a growing legend along the Oregon coast, catching the attention of newspapers and magazines as he travels from library to library,…

I found myself wondering just how the creative writing process works for others. Oh, I know that some practices are the same for all writers, but I wonder if every novelist begins with what I call the glimmer. While all of my manuscripts are word processed using MS Word, I also keep handwritten journals - the ones my husband says will be worth something someday. *soft laugh*
Within these journals are the glimmers. They begin in the clouds, in an advertisement on the side of a bus, on the bark o…

I've known for nearly two years that when the new Port Orford Library opened it would have a 'Jayel Gibson' conference room. I donated the money earned from my book sales to help with construction and received the plaque as acknowlegement. But, somehow hearing it tossed about in conversation just gave it a dream-like, furturistic feel. I never gave much thought to the reality of the event.
Well, July 5th was the library's grand opening, and there it was in sheet rock, paint and polishe

Lately, I've been racing against the clock. Gearing up for
Quondam promotional travel beginning May 1st, and working on the second manuscript in the Ever'neath series has kept me very busy. We're looking forward to upcoming appearances in OR, WA and of course, BookExpo in Los Angeles. The weekend before Memorial Day in LA - what were they thinking?
Mates just finished this portrait of Ever'neath residents, Mora and Enoch.…

This year's conference was quite special, and an ecclectic group of writers drew a record crowd. There were readings at the fairgrounds on Friday night and two full days of writer workshops. It was great to see familiar faces, meet new friends and share. Presenters included:
Journalist and New York Times bestselling author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, David Oliver Relin
Canadian singer and songwriter, Dan Frechette
Ann Cameron, a
