I think a well rounded character: is someone whose troubled and needs to figure the problem out; a person of contradiction and deep morals; lastly, someone who understands the same troubles and tribulatons of everyday life: a person we can relate to. However, I'm having trouble developing such a character, and with no reason or even less sense of mind, I find it difficult to create such a character. I certainly agree with your assessment of successful story characters. Our readers must be able to identify and empathize with fictional characters, just as they do with people in the real world.
There are several very good books on the subject. Three that I use in my writing classes and recommend at my workshops are:
Creating Unforgettable Characters by Linda Seger
Elements of Writing Fiction - Characters & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
and
Dynamic Characters by Nancy Kress
Orson Scott Card's entire writing series is a must have resource for the fantasy and science fiction writer.
I also find it helpful to act out the scenes, so that I actually feel the emotions of the situation. If the author doesn't feel it, the reader won't either.
